Working at the Hartman & Hartman law offices was a grueling task but it kept Peyton busy, so busy in fact that she couldn’t remember the last time she went out. So when she got home from work she chose to do something different. She didn’t want to be stuck inside anymore and she didn’t want to hold on to the excuse that she was hiding from her own eyes. But there was so much that one girl could do when the things you saw weren’t like the things that other people saw.
Certain people would have images over their faces. To her it was like looking through a human mirage to the true monster behind the mask. And most of the time those monsters would frighten her to the point of fleeing. And that was the real reason for her antisocial behavior. It was also the reason that she didn’t date anymore. It was too often that a boyfriend would want to introduce her to a bunch of his friends and one, if not two, of them wore those human faces.
But tonight was going to be different. She needed fresh air; she needed to get away from her bad day at the office; most of all she needed to feel normal. So she fired up her computer and looked for things to do in the city. Shaking her head, Peyton was upset at herself about her lack of knowledge about the goings on downtown. In a last ditch effort to find something, anything, she opened up the website for Pioneer Square.
With a sigh, she realized that she had already missed the Tree Lighting Ceremony but she could still go and enjoy the Holiday Spirit by seeing the tree in all its glory. Besides, she assured herself, there wouldn’t be that many people there. And less people meant less of a chance to let her eyes work their ‘magic’ on her.
Smiling at her tenacity, Peyton dressed warmly in thick black slacks, a pale blue sweater and black boots. Donning her heavy black coat, white gloves and a matching scarf, she headed out.
When she reached the square, Peyton nodded to herself. There were carolers singing, people watching and listening... It was certainly the holiday spirit that was catching her up in the moment. So much so that she felt compelled to step in the nearby Starbucks and get herself a Hot Cocoa, complete with whipped cream and chocolate syrup.
So content in herself, she walked to the seating/step area of the square and took a seat. She hadn’t bothered to look around herself. She hadn’t bothered to make sure that in the small lake of faces, there wasn’t one wearing a human mask.

Ryuu was sick and tired of the ruckus that had been going on in Avandrya between a few demons. They had been at each other's throats off and on for a few days, yelling and screaming, separated only to do the same thing again. Exactly why they were fighting and throwing loud words at each other but fight they did and now they had been taken into custody for their actions. Served them right...
If there was something Ryuu hated, it was to have to get in between two people that couldn't handle themselves in Throuveil. Ryuu had just gotten sick of it and stepped in. All he had to do was lock eyes with one of them while holding the other by the neck and it was over.
Of course he couldn't help a slight scene which he usually did once he used his power of manipulating the mind in anger and not in his usual sexual appeal. Of course, some demonic ladies thought he was sexy as well when he was pissed off but they surely didn't dare to walk close to him -- which was probably the smartest they could have done anyway.
The argument had died instantly when he appeared, the man he had stared into the eyes of, had fallen silent at his command and would never be the same again. He had demanded he would never say another word for the upcoming year. The other man he did the same with, but he made sure both men would never recognize each other again either, he didn't even care if they were child hood friends or if they had just met, they brought it to themselves anyway.
Still with a rather upset mind, he chose to take his leave with the two men being taken care of by the guards closest to them. He was grateful that Throuveil was well guarded or he would have had to make more trouble in handing them into custody for their behavior.
This little display however, made sure that other demons kept in check since the gossip of him intervening in an argument and the way he handled them both, would spread like wildfire through Demon Underground, everybody would know about it but he didn't complain -- quite the opposite. He was after all the Curator of Avandrya and that meant respect and what other good way was there to get respect by showing power over others that misbehaved?
Now he was walking the streets outside instead, walking in the human world to take a bit of fresh air which he felt he really needed after this. It annoyed the heck out of him to have to step in to a usually calm and well behaved place to live in.
He had heard there would be a Christmas tree ceremony in the human world which he actually wanted to see. There were two reasons for that. One, He had been raised in the human world and knew the customs well and he liked to see small traditions still living on even after eight hundred years. And, Second, he hadn’t fed yet which meant he needed to either see something sexual he could pleasure himself by looking at, or get someone – man or woman did not matter. To sleep with him, he of course preferred the later if he could choose.
And here he was, in front of the tree which he had seen being lit. So many people around, so many woman and men to gaze upon to find the perfect victim and so hard to choose which one to take!
He stood leaning against a lamp pole with his arms crossed over his chest when he spotted a very fine specimen he really wanted to take home and do some nasties with! She was beautiful in that snow white hair and piercing ice blue eyes! He nearly lost his breath when he saw her.
Ryuu rose to a stand and straightened his black coat out and put his hands in his pockets and slowly strolled up to her, his mirror showed soft blue eyes, short dark brown hair and a Japanese man in the height of 6’. While the demonic side of him appeared to have fire colored eyes where flames of fire almost seemed to dance in them, his hair lay in thick black waves down to his waist and he reached 7’3 above the ground. His demonic skin glimmered somewhat in orange scales that resembled dragon scales according to the storybooks for children as well as his canines resembling a vampire’s or a wild cat.
“Konbanwa, pretty lady… fine night isn’t it?”
He said, greeting her ‘good evening’ in Japanese just because he could and smiled a coy sweet smile, standing a few steps away from her.

So enraptured by looking at the lights, Peyton hadn’t even noticed the man walking up to her. When his voice sounded, she jumped a bit and turned her head to look up at him with laughter on her lips. But that laughter died before it started. Widening her icy blue eyes, she felt panic welling up in her chest.
That panics spurred her up off her ass and into a standing position. Her cocoa spilled on the ground as she did so. Shaking her head, she forced a smile... She had to be polite; she couldn’t look like a freak in public.
“Good evening to you,” her voice cracked and came out in barely a whisper. “I...I’m sorry. I have...have to go.”
Turning on her heel, she stalked as quickly as she could up the steps and to the sidewalk without actually running. Once on the sidewalk, she didn’t bother turning around. She headed for the streets because there, she might be able to get lost in the crowd.
“Shit, shit, shit,” she admonished herself. “Why didn’t I see him? I should have been prepared!”
Peyton was used to people coming up to her and she had prided herself on her abilities of observation. In a club, the supermarket, anywhere really, Peyton would keep her eye out and when she saw the monsters headed toward her... Well, she would make a quick exit. It had worked well thus far but tonight, she had let her guard down.
As her heart started to calm, she allow herself a bit of a chuckle. Rolling her eyes, she looked to the side and back down into the throng of people near the tree. There were too many people for her to make out if the... demon was still down there. But, she wasn’t going to let some strange being bother her. She was here to have fun, damn it. And fun she would have. Who cares if one man thought she was crazy. There were plenty more where that came from.
She sat down on one of the benches and began speaking to a homeless youth there. Friendly banter really and Peyton was even kind enough to hand the boy a ten dollar bill. It was the Christmas season after all.
Peyton was sure to look ahead of her and to the sides and she was relieved to find that there were no monsters there. But she failed again. This time, she didn’t look behind her.

Such a beautiful smile did she have, wow... he was mesmerized by her to say the least. Young, beautiful, full of life... aaand... running away.
"nh?"
He blinked and just looked at her, did she just excuse herself and left? That was a first! but... wait...Ryuu replayed the scene in his head. Could it... could it be she saw him? The true him and not the guise? She was human.. how could she... wait...
"a seer?..."
He mumbled to himself and frowned. There hadn't been a seer in Oregon for over 50 years! Now he really had to pursue her! He started to move only to realize she had managed to loose herself but that beautiful head couldn't be missed since it couldn't be too far away! ryuu ran towards a lamp pole and climbed up like a cat half way and looked over people's heads and eventually spotted her.
"... Target, in sight!"
He grinned to himself then leaped off the pole and landed on the ground with ease, using his free running techniques to get around it was quicker when it came to pursuing people after all free running was the best way since it made it easier to get around people when you were running. He avoided to have to land on his back since the ground were rather wet from the raining earlier during the day.
He caught up to her and found her talking to a homeless person from the judgment of clothing. Ryuu couldn't help but tilt his head and watch her interact with the person she probably didn't know while he stood behind her.
"You ran... why?"
He asked with the same kind voice as before, his hands still in his jacket pockets while still standing about two steps away from her. He would have to take another step and reach for her if he wanted to grab her but he was going with the soft approach until he had all the facts. If she was a seer, she had to be taken in and she needed to be shown the Demon world and everything there. Demons and other creatures non-human truly did exist and very much so. She had to learn they weren't harmful. Ryuu remained with his head somewhat tilted while looking at her, waiting for a response.

She had been smiling, laughing and joking with the homeless teen when Ryuu came up behind her. And when that voice sounded again, she jumped with a start. Again, she was caught off guard. Smiling apologetically to the teen, Peyton turned a steely gaze upon Ryuu. She was too filled with adrenaline to be frightened.
“Because I don’t want to talk to you or anyone like you,” she spat.
Walking away from the demon, Peyton cursed herself yet again. This time she made it seem that she was prejudiced against Asians. Rolling her eyes, she sighed and shook her head. But her step never slowed.
Adrenaline was falling and Peyton was left alone with the thought that this time he could be following her.
“No way. No way at all he is following you, Peyton,” she said to herself. “He thinks you hate Asians. He’ll want to stay away. I probably ruined his day. Good!”
Still, she sped up as she walked down the darkening streets. It was only when she turned a corner without thinking that she realized that there was construction blocking the end of the alley she now stood in the middle of.
Sighing heavily, Peyton turned to go back the way she came.((Continued in Streets & Alleys: Sight Unseen))
